160 John was active in the local community, serving as Chairman of the District Council of Noarlunga, and was one of the first wardens of St Philip and St James Church, instrumental in the church’s foundation. ( Express & Telegraph, Tuesday 25 February 1902). He was part of a committee formed on the arrival of Reverend Miller in the parish to assist with renovation works at St Philip and St James church. Most of the Mudge children married and had families of their own, and all survived to adulthood. Son Stephen, who became a farmer like his father, died aged 45 of cancer. Youngest daughter Sarah Elizabeth died from an internal abscess, aged 25 years. John Mudge died from a malignant tumour of the face at his son’s home in McLaren Vale. Elizabeth died of senile decay at the age of 93 years at Oak Hill, Hackham, the home of her daughter, Emma Jane Short. Murton William Horace MURTON b 10 Nov 1881 Wallaroo d 16 Nov 1953 Adelaide aged 72 years bur St Philip & St James Noarlunga (not in burial register) William Horace Murton was a son of William Murton and his wife Emmeline May nee Lanyon. He married Zelma Evelyn Margaret Parsons on 16 February 1921 at Cummins. They had four children, Reginald (b 1921 Port Lincoln), Raymond (b 1923 Cummins), Gwenda (b 1924 Cummins) and John (b 1927 Cummins). At the time of his death, William was a labourer residing at Yankalilla. The cause of death was chronic myeloid leukaemia. Also in this grave is William’s granddaughter Sandra Amos.
