Piazza della Valle

The Piazza della Valle is a wonderful venue for community and private events.

It was officially opened by Premier Jay Wetherill MP, Mayor Lorraine Rosenberg and Vicki Osland from the Piazza della Valle Italian Heritage Association on 6 November 2011.

Its name translated means ‘Plaza in the Valley’.

The contribution of early Italian settlers to McLaren Vale, particularly its viticulture industry, is significant and can be seen today in the number of well-respected wineries in the region with names of Italian origin.

The desire to acknowledge the Italian contribution to McLaren Vale and to create a place for the entire community to enjoy culminated in the idea of an Italian-style town square, the ‘Piazza’, for the Main Street of McLaren Vale.

The Piazza was completed in two stages, with funding support from the state government’s Places for People program and monies raised by the steering committee from sponsorship and fund raising events.

The large space features granite steps, an outdoor stage and all-weather pavilion.

Internationally renowned sculptor, Terrance Plowright, was commissioned to create a water feature for the Piazza, which was unveiled in October 2012. The water feature is now the magnificent centrepiece of this beautiful community space.
